The nineteenth century saw a huge growth in the population of Great Britain.
The reason for this increase is not clear, probably, for example, people living longer, immigration and the industrial evolution, people comes in the cities for better way of life. Large numbers of people were looking for work, so wages were very low, and there were only few available jobs. In the 19th century, people lived in very difficult conditions because they lived near factories with poor hygiene. They had bad nutrition. This favoured mortality and diseases. Towards 1830 charity associations came to help the poor families. People could be ill with cholera when they drank water. Streets in London were dirty. Conditions of life were very difficult. Children lived in the street and the industrial revolution caused pollution. The more struck of the society were the children: They worked hard to helped their parents because families were very poor and they didn’t have enough money. There were children living with their families in these desperate situations but there were also numerous, homeless, destitute children living on the streets of London. Many children were turned out of home and left to fend for themselves at an early age and many more ran away because of ill treatment. Many of them lived by stealing, and to the respectable Victorians they must have seemed a very real threat to society. The children were also underpaid, they worked for only a few ponds.
Prostitution: the other victims of the poverty were the women, a lot of them and young girls were forced by theirs families to prostitute.
Organizations, clergymen and single women became concerned about prostitution, which came to be known as "The Great Social Evil”. The years between 1848 and 1870 saw a veritable explosion in the number of institutions working to "reclaim" these "fallen women" from the streets and retrain them for entry into respectable society—usually for work as domestic. The prostitutes were treated as commodities, they were to the acieses of the society and they didn’t have any right, and often they were subject of maltreatments , blackmail and also homicides.
