Why does not the current administration request legislation to protect our nation's clean water supplies ?

My question is why does not the current administration request legislation to protect our nation’s clean water supply, from natural gas companies and oil companies, by repealing all exemptions to EPA regulations (safe drink water act, clean water act, superfund law, etc.) that were granted specifically to natural gas companies and oil companies by the 2005 Energy Act ?
These exemptions have given a green light to the use of hydraulic fracturing that injects 596 toxic chemicals, in a high pressure sand and water mixture to crack open shale and rock to release trapped natural gas, that allows some trapped natural gas and some of those 596 toxic chemicals to leak into adjacent underground well water and surface water (streams, rivers, lakes). Some of these chemicals are known to cause cancer and have caused tumors in people drinking well water after hydraulic fracturing was used near by their water supply.
How can we decrease our health care costs if we don’t protect our nation’s clean water supply from contamination caused by hydraulic fracturing ? Our local, state, and federal water regulations do not require testing for chemicals in hydraulic fracturing and current water purification systems do not filter out the majority of those toxic chemicals. A $ 21000 reverese osmosis water purification system could not remove the glycol from hydraulic fracturing toxic chemicals and will also require a water distillation process in addition to reverse osmosis to try and remove the glycol.
The 2005 Energy Act legalized this form of unintentional industrial terrorism by natural gas companies and oil companies contamimating our nation’s clean water supply and does not allow them to be held accountable for those actions.

A year ago I put mine and my daughters belongings in storage after my mother passed away. I lived in a 4 bedroom 2 bath house and all the content was placed in this storage unit. I made this choice so that I could go and take care of my disabled father.

After visiting the storage unit I would have a major headache and high blood pressure. At first I related this to the fact that my stuff was in storage and this sparked emotions from the visual reminder. But I started to see the same pattern in my teen aged daughter. She was complaining about the same issues that I was experiencing myself.

After a few months the storage company had the facility painted and they had contracted with a nationally known painting contractor to perform the duties.

It wasn’t until I went to retrieve some of the items in the unit and placing them in the back of my SUV did I discover the problem. In the car we started to smell a really strong odor. Once we got to my dads house and went to unload the items I noticed the discoloration of the items.

So I made a complaint to the office of the storage company and was informed that I wasn’t the only one that has had this issue. They continued to give me a bogus number for the contractor. So I turned my attention back to the storage facility and got the run around. So I contacted the Department of Consumer Affairs about my complaint. I soon started to see results in compliance from the storage company and they gave me the right name and number to the contractor which I contacted.

I addressed the fact that we have experienced some health issues from the products used and the product has coated our entire worldly belongings. I raised the issue that suspected Xylene based paint being used to paint the doors of the unit. He then informed me that he had used AUTOMOTIVE paint which has low VOC’s and that it meets the federal and state requirements. I responded by saying to him, it may meet the federal and state requirements IF it was used in the intended application Environment such as a painting boot for automotive painting or in a industrial setting with proper safeguards being exercised. He did not know how to respond to that bit of information that I had.

See I am a single parent and I have been a professional commercial and industrial painting for the past 25 years. I know the liability laws and application requirements regulated by the EPA and states.

The painting company is will to reach a settlement on my claim due to the fact they do not want this to become a public issue. However they are only wanting to pay for the damaged property that photo’s show paint residue on( Meaning only white surfaced items). The darker items are contaminated just as well as the liter colored items are. So…..

I have contacted the EPA regional office to have a field agent assist me on return to the unit to take photo’s and have air quality samples taken and test to disclose exactly what toxins are present in the unit. I have also complained the EPA that the painting company sprayed airborne contaminates in wide open air without any filtration system being used. Placing the public at risk and contaminating the contents of my storage unit. They have complied in my request for testing.

The storage companies insurance agent called yesterday wanting to get a recorded statement from me about what has happened.

I need to know if this is a required over the phone recording? Could they not turn and use this against me later in litigation? Because you can not modify the recorded statement. Should I decline to entertain this request?

These are two very large Corporations that have conspired to violate federal regulations and has put the public in great danger by releasing airborne toxins into the air. This storage facility is in a highly populated community and has a water way less than 500 feet away and a community ballpark less than 1000 feet away.

It is about the way the product was applied to the building and it is about the contamination of the toxins that has damaged not only my worldly possession but also the environment surrounding the facility as well.

The fact that the painting company is willing to reach a settlement on the damaged items and wanting photo’s to prove the damage is also a issue. Contamination is not always able to be documented on photo’s. The residue is just as bad on the items that it does not show up as easily on.

This recorded statement thing just seems to me like just another attempt to try and get out any liability settlement. The paint company has already admitted fault. But the storage company up until now have refused any responsibility for the damages. The insurance adjuster that wants the recorded statement if for the Storage company and not the painting company.

" The raw material for Phytin production is rice bran and cereal grains bran, as well as oil plant cakes obtained as by-products of the food processing and oil-producing industries.

When processing the raw plant material, it should be known that many plant seeds (especially of the bean species) contain the enzyme phytase together with Phytin. In aqueous solutions phytase causes partial or complete hydrolysis of Phytin to intermediary products, such as inositol-mono-, inositol-di-, and inositol-tri-ortho-phosphates.

Different technological processes are available for industrial Phytin isolation. They can be classified in two groups, according to the extracting medium used. Most methods include extraction of the plant material with acidulated water, using some organic acids or dilute mineral acids.

The aqueous -acid extracts, in addition to the main product, yield also protein substances, inorganic salts, sugars, etc. some of the proteins precipitate with time and can be further separated by filtration. @DeanM None of the laboratories here in the Philippines (where I am) are familiar with how to extract/isolate phytic acid, even the state-owned Department of Science and Technology. They are asking for instructions from us, which we can’t provide because we haven’t got a single clue on how to do it.

For example if conservatives including not just the republicans, but especially the libertarians and the government wasn’t regulating oil companies and other businesses anymore – that reminds me of days of the industrial revolution. In those days there was thousands and thousands of people who died from work related injuries and no overtime pay but employers nonetheless forced people to work for overtime and many employers still on paid for full time weekly wages. In other words, imagine working at a very dangerous job where someone was forced to work 100 hours a week and was just paid for working 40 hours. Then imagine no health care insurance and someone got seriously hurt on the job and they died because their employer had no safety standards, couldn’t get medical attention because they’re employer refused to have medical insurance – does that sound insane?
Then as bad as that sounds, imagine to top that off no safety regulations on water, food and medicine – is that brain dead to have such policies?
To make it worse imagine no regulations on banks and they demanded immediate payment exactly on a due date and if a homeowner with a car loan doesn’t pay on the exact due date that banks just came and repossessed everyone’s homes and cars who’s late on their house and car payments?

Well I would say if there was the notion that it would never be that bad – think back to times when there was no regulations, such as during the days of the industrial revolution and other past times.
People might say the republicans aren’t that bad now, but there is an economic philosophy called Laissez Faire that conservatives like to live by which is at least calling for minimal or few regulations and at worst especially concerning the libertarians – Laissez Faire economic philosophies at it’s worse is NO REGULATION AT ALL. Yes, there are people who believe that extreme Laissez Faire economic philosophies is what should be in place and not just liberatarians, but many republicans do as well.
Some people think it would never get that extreme again, but there are people who want that which I’ve seen in political forums saying this.
Imagine the past times where this was the case and if people who want such times want times like those again.
This is why I asked if conservatives had their way with letting businesses do anything they want – should the worst be expected?

For example –
Should people expect that they won’t get to keep jobs for long because employers are free to lay off and fire workers for any reason including ridiculous whims they entertain or people refusing to work overtime when employers demand they work for the same pay as 40 hours? (No I’m not talking about salary pay)

Should people expect that they could die from work related injuries on on the job and that it’s just a fact of life they have to expect?

Should women at work have to expect that they could be sexually harrassed on the job and worse from their bosses or other employees and that they have to take it or lose their job – no matter what job they work at?

Should people expect to have nothing but dangerous food and drink dangerous water besides other dangerous fluids to consume, because of no laws and regulations are in place to protect people from food and drink being contaminated?

Should kids expect to build oil castles instead of sand castles on the beach?

Should people expect that they could die from medicine or from medical treatment because doctors and hospitals don’t have to be accountable anymore because the conservatives took off all the regulations on that too?

And the most simple question is – should people expect everyday of their life to be like playing russian roulette unless they happen to be wealthy and can afford to have safety at work, good health, oil free beaches, safe food and water, etc?
I asked this also because if certain people had their way it could be that bad.
So that’s why I ask – is conservative extremists getting their way and thus are then allowed to do away with all the regulations – is it worth all the suffering such philosophies and policies would bring?

Sirs, the death of 35-year-old Roona, due to hepatitis yesterday has led to panic among residents of Mansa Devi locality here. Following the public outcry, health and civic authorities should initiate some preventive measures. Roona was admitted in the Civil Hospital yesterday morning under suspicion that she was afflicted with jaundice. Later, she was found to be suffering from Viral hepatitis-A.

Sirs, hundreds of residents of Phagwara town, including those from localities like Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar, Shivpuri, Rattanpura, Onkar Nagar, Industrial Area, Bhagatpura and Mansa Devi Nagar, were suffering from various water-borne diseases including jaundice, gastroenteritis and viral fever. Lack of sanitation, drainage and blocking and overflowing of sewerage system of several places were main reasons behind the mess.

Despite the seriousness of the situation, the authorities of the Phagwara Nagar Council and the health department those have been interviewed by me in the past months like President, Nagar Council, Executive Officer Nagar Council, Sub Divisional Magistrate, Phagwara and Senior Medical Officer, Phagwara and have been published in the Newspaper and periodicals with my name as well had been claiming that the situation is under control.

Doctors of Civil Hospital who were treating the deceased said she was transfused two bottles of blood. Ashok Kumar, husband of Roona, who was attending on her, was suffering from jaundice as well. On enquiry from Ashok Kumar he told that he had brought his wife to the hospital in an unconscious condition a day before.

Sirs, the Lab technician Mrs. Tarsem Kaur & her son Rohit are also getting treatment in Private Room No. 1 of the hospital. Both are being treated for jaundice. Both of them are also the residents of Mansa Devi Nagar. Sirs, dozens of residents of that locality are suffering from jaundice.

Kapurthala Civil Surgeon Dr. Avtar Singh admitted that the deceased had been suffering from water borne diseases.

Sirs, in Phagwara the cases of diarrhea, malaria, intestinal helminthes (Hook work disease) that leads to severe consequences such as cognitive impairment massive dysentery or anemia & Hepatitis A. (The disease with which she was found to be suffering) is spreading like anything due to lack of SAFE DRINKING WATER, SANITATION & BASIC HEALTH CARE.

Sirs, for the urban poor, the living conditions are the worst. If this problem could not be addressed to in an adequate & timely manner serial deaths & associated health consequences will follow. Air pollution causes chronic & acute respiratory diseases, vantilatory malfunction, heart diseases, cancer of lungs due to Industrial Pollution by the heavy industries within the highly congested and prone areas of the town. All the three Mills like JCT Phagwara, Wahid & Sandher Sughar Mill Phagwara (Formerly Jagatjit Sugar Mill) and Sukhjit Starch & Chemical Industries Phagwara and number of industries of world repute are situated at the Prime and congested residential areas of Phagwara.

Sirs, due to in adequate access to clean drinking water everybody of the town looks like a patient. Hargobind Nagar is the posh locality of the town developed by Improvement Trust. This colony had been developed for residential purpose. But now it has turned to a colony of Nursing Homes with the connivance of the officials. The hospital wastes being generated by the mushrooming growth of these Nursing Homes pose a special risk and has the potential to take epidemic form.

I personally brought these civic issues in the knowledge of civic authorities but no action had been made so far.

Kindly look in to the matter seriously for the lives of lakhs of people.

"The few corrupt officials of the SFDA are the shame of the whole system and their scandals have revealed some very serious problems," agency spokeswoman Yan Jiangying said at a news conference held to highlight efforts to improve China’s track record on food and drug safety.

The government also assured athletes, coaches, officials, and others could count on safe meals at the 2008 Beijing Summer Games, and that food would be free of substances that could trigger a positive result in tests for banned performance enhancing drugs.

Food safety authorities, meanwhile, promised to investigate a newspaper report that more than half of the water coolers in Beijing used counterfeit branded water.

Yan was asked to comment on Zheng’s sentence and that of his subordinate, Cao Wenzhuang, a former director of SFDA’s drug registration department who was last week sentenced to death for accepting bribes and dereliction of duty. Cao was given a two-year reprieve, a ruling which is usually commuted to life in prison if the convict is deemed to have reformed.

"We should seriously reflect and learn lessons from these cases," Yan said.

Zheng, 63, was convicted of taking cash and gifts worth 2,000 when he was in charge of the State Food and Drug Administration.

His death sentence was unusually heavy even for China, believed to carry out more court-ordered executions than all other nations combined, and indicates the leadership’s determination to confront the country’s dire product safety record.

Last year, dozens of people died in Panama after taking medicine contaminated with diethylene glycol imported from China. It was passed off as harmless glycerin.

Yan said she did not have any information about whether the Chinese manufacturer, Taixing Glycerin Factory, and the Chinese distributor, CNSC Fortune Way, had been punished.

China admitted last month that it was the source of the deadly chemical that ended up in cough syrup and other treatments but insists the chemical was originally labeled as for industrial use only. Beijing blames the Panama traders who eventually bought the shipment for fraudulently relabeling it as medical-grade glycerin.

Scandals over contaminated Chinese food exports have underscored chronic problems with adulterated ingredients and fake products in the domestic supply, raising questions of how well China can guarantee the purity of food for the Olympics.

"All the procedures involving Olympic food, including production, processing, packaging, storing and transporting will be closely monitored," Sun Wenxu, an official with the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, told reporters Tuesday.

A food safety official also promised an investigation into the Beijing Times newspaper report about water coolers, but noted that a May inspection of Beijing’s drinking water products found more than 96 percent were safe.

"Problems found with some individual cases cannot be interpreted to mean that the entire water industry has problems," Wu Jianping of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine told a news conference.

In North America earlier this year, pet food containing Chinese wheat gluten tainted with the chemical melamine was blamed for the deaths of dogs and cats.

Since then, U.S. authorities have turned away or recalled toxic fish, juice containing unsafe color additives and popular toy trains decorated with lead paint.

Yan said the food and drug administration was working to strengthen its safety procedures. The administration has already announced a series of measures to tighten safety controls and closed factories where illegal chemicals or other problems were found.

But Yan acknowledged that her agency’s supervision of food and drug safety remains unsatisfactory and that it has been slow to tackle the problem.

"China is a developing country and our supervision of food and drugs started quite late and our foundation for this work is weak, so we are not optimistic about the current food and drug safety situation," Yan said.

Chinese officials have already said the country faces social unrest and a further tarnished image abroad unless it improves the quality and safety of its food and medicine.

Last week, China’s food safety watchdog said almost 20 percent of products made for domestic consumption were found to be substandard in the first half of 2007.

China has also stepped up its inspections of imported products and said some U.S. products are not safe.

In the latest case, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Tuesday that a shipment of sugar-free drink mix from the United States had been rejected for having too much red dye.
